The conflicting thoughts arose - is this not the same woman? Or had she also adopted an alias, just as he had?

Perhaps she too felt he resembled the son she had abandoned. The thin wall between reality and fantasy was crumbling.

Sipping the flavourless coffee, they made idle chit-chat. Tasuku used his host skills to draw her out. Women like her tended to indulge in self-absorbed rambling, and this one was no exception.

Emboldened by the alcohol, she became increasingly self-absorbed. When he casually inquired about her family, she adopted an exaggeratedly anguished expression.

"...I'm such a horrible woman. I can't believe how cruel I've been."

"Horrible? In what way?"

Leaning in close, she confessed in a nasal voice.

"I abandoned my children."

Feigning surprise, Tasuku listened as she wistfully recounted:

"Children just cling to you so desperately, trapping you. Being around them, I felt like I was drowning. So before they could kill me, I ran away."

Tasuku slowly closed his eyes.

At this point, whether the woman before him was his mother, or merely someone resembling her, no longer mattered.

Hearing those words he had expected all along come directly from the woman's mouth, the ripples of emotion calmed. The only image reflected in his tranquil heart was that of Kairi.

His one and only family.

That is the person who occupied his entire being, beyond mere family.

"I really did such terrible things to my children. They must hate me, don't they?"

The woman spoke these insincere words in a rapturous tone.

Tasuku finally understood why he had wanted to talk to this woman.

He opened his eyes and enlightened her.

"Your children just clung to you out of instinct, not because they needed you. They're doing just fine without you."

The woman's face contorted with agitation and indignation, as if he had suddenly taken away her masturbatory tool.

"But- but those kids were so clingy and annoying, always clinging to me!"

"They're happy."

"Huh?"

"Even without you, your children are living well and truly happy."

He had always wanted to tell ‘that woman’ just that.

She was never needed beyond being their mother. Her absence had not hindered their happiness in the slightest.

The thick layers of makeup seemed to sag, making the woman appear a decade older.

Perhaps this woman was not his actual mother after all.

Tasuku watched with a smile as she stormed out, the click of her heels echoing.

――But thanks to you leaving, I could make Kairi mine alone.

“Thank you, mom,” he murmured.

He never imagined he would one day be grateful to ‘that woman’.

He drained the now cold coffee, tasting the bittersweet flavour spreading across his revived taste buds.

――Time to go back. To Kairi.

He couldn't wait to see him.

As Tasuku opened the door to leave the cafe, his eyes widened. Standing before him was the very person he had been longing to see.

"Aniki... What are you doing here?" Tasuku asked with a serious expression.

"I thought your work would be ending around now, so I came to pick you up. The manager told me you were here with a female customer."

Kairi's eyes darted around, searching for the woman. Sensing the jealousy radiating from him, Tasuku's expression softened.

"Nah, she's long gone. She was just some woman I didn't care about at all."

He gently pinched and tugged on the rounded lobe of Kairi's ear, whispering softly while delving into its depths.

"I only want you, Kairi."

Up close, Kairi's dark irises glistened. The piercing on the tip of his brother's dick was likely getting wet as well.

"Tasuku," Kairi murmured sweetly, almost pleadingly.

"Let's go home, quickly."

"Of course."

The two descended the stairs together.

At the bottom, the tranquil night air opened its calm embrace.

*Author’s Postscript:

Hello. I'm Fuyuko Sano.

This book is the paperback edition of a previously published novel with the same title. The main story remains unchanged, but I've added a newly written side story.

I remember struggling to write the kind of love that is unique to brothers. It’s family love, romantic love, and even the kind of twisted emotions that can arise from being too close—something only families can experience. That’s what I wanted to capture.

Tasuku (the younger brother) is like a ‘cat Seme’. He cries naturally during tense scenes, and I clearly remember thinking, “Oh, he’s crying here?” while writing it. It left a strong impression on me. Haha.

When writing a story, I submit character settings and an outline with plot points like the introduction, development, turn, and conclusion to the editor. But there are always things you can’t really see until you start layering the story from the first sentence. The way characters react, especially—that becomes clear only when you reach certain parts. This is something I find fascinating.

In the newly written side story, ‘A Calm Night’, Tasuku is still obsessing over his older brother. But their unique relationship has settled into their everyday lives—it’s become their ‘normal life’. Tasuku is now grounded in reality, doing his best to maintain his life with Kairi.

There’s also mention of the mother who abandoned them. But it’s unclear whether the mother in the side story is the real one or not. That doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that the mother is completely gone from the brothers’ world, allowing their world to become quiet and free of any disturbances.

A big thank you to Masara Minase-sensei for the illustrations. When I reopened the book, I found myself staring at the illustrations again and again. The little brothers are just too adorable! And I truly love this cover image.

And to my editor, thank you for all your hard work with the paperback edition. I'm so glad this work is now more accessible.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone who picked up this book. If there's even a small part of it that you enjoyed, I couldn’t ask for more as an author.

*Translator’s Note: Tasuku finally called her ‘mom’. I guess he finally found closure as well. Not sure if that was really their mother. I guess we’ll never know…  Anyway, that’s the end, guys! Thank you so much for reading this translation! I’m in love with Fuyuko Sano’s works and have been reading more of her works which I will of course share with you guys in the near future. I know this story might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I would like to thank you anyway for not dropping horrible comments despite how you feel. I highly respect people who are able to respect others that might not share the same value as them. In the future, I will be translating stories that might be immoral to other people such as incest or 3P. That’s my kind of thing. Among those normal sweet ones too, of course. You can read if you want and leave if you don’t. But to those who had been reading and liking the same kind of thing as me, we’re buddies until the end. I’ll be sipping beer in hell waiting for my buddies to accompany me too hahahaha! -K

Inside a long, horizontal aquarium, a one-metre-long silver arowana swims slowly and smoothly. The tank is embedded in the wall and surrounded by a wooden frame, giving it the appearance of a moving painting.

This establishment has two faces: a café during the day and a bar at night. During the day, it offers a calm atmosphere with a Gothic-style interior. At night, blue lights are turned on to create an enigmatic and mysterious space.

As spring sunlight pours through the retro-style stained glass windows, Yougoshi Tasuku stood behind the counter, carefully drip-brewing coffee.

Since quitting his job as a host two years ago, he's tried various kinds of work. Working in construction under the scorching sun or doing security work didn’t bother him at all. He had only one priority when choosing a job: being able to finish by 6 p.m.

No matter how much others might look at him with disapproval, Tasuku always ended his workday on time. If a job didn’t allow him to stick to this schedule, he would quit without hesitation.

And so, every night, he would spend time at home with his older brother.

Though there were days when his brother had to work late due to his job, he made an effort to come home as early as possible.

The older brother’s private life belonged entirely to Tasuku. Meanwhile, Tasuku’s private life was completely dedicated to Kairi.

The manager, Enomoto, emerged from the backroom. With his neatly styled hair, black cross tie, kamar vest, and sommelier apron, he looked exceptionally refined—though Tasuku was dressed in the same attire. It seemed almost unbelievable that he had once been a host.

"Hey, Tasuku," Enomoto said.

Even now, the manager seemed to find it a bit awkward to call him ‘Tasuku’. They had always addressed each other by their stage names from their days as hosts.

Both of them had worked at the same host club, with Enomoto as the senior. However, his time as a host was merely to save money for his dream of running a café slash bar. Once he had saved enough, he quit without hesitation.

The café slash bar they now run has an unusual concept centred around exotic creatures. In addition to this main branch, which features the arowana, they also operate other branches, such as a café slash bar with birds of prey. And they are still in the midst of expanding their business.

It wasn't just about coming up with an idea on a whim; Enomoto would study the biology of the creatures used as the café's concept until he reached a level where one might be inclined to call him ‘Professor’.

Tasuku started working here when Enomoto contacted him after a long time, asking for help because he was short-staffed. Initially, Tasuku planned to work for a short period. But since he was always allowed to leave by 6 p.m. and found Enomoto's work ethic interesting, he’s continued working here for the past six months.

The manager pressed his palms together firmly in front of his chest, speaking in a low voice so that the customers wouldn’t hear.

“Please, I’m begging you.”

“Haa?” Tasuku replied.

“Hey, at least hear me out before you say ‘haa’?’”

“What’s it about?”

“Could you help out at the bar tomorrow night, just for one day?”

Helping at the bar basically meant working a shift after 6 p.m. Tasuku gave an immediate answer.

“No way.”

“I’m seriously in trouble here. Last night, the bartender collapsed while working. I called an ambulance and went with him. But he needed emergency surgery for an intestinal obstruction. He has to stay rested for a while. I plan to manage with the other bartender and myself. But tomorrow, of all days, we have a reservation for a large party.”

“...”

“I can trust you with both the drinks and serving the customers. So please, I’m begging you—”

“Absolutely no way.”

Tasuku refused without a second thought and proceeded to deliver the freshly brewed coffee to a customer. Even as he smiled politely at the customer, his insides churned with anger.

Anyone who tried to take away his precious time with Kairi was an enemy to be eliminated, no matter who they were.

The hostility must have shown on his face because, although the manager looked troubled, he didn’t press further.

When his shift ended at 6 p.m., as usual, there was a message from his brother on his smartphone. Even trivial, everyday content made him smile. After buying groceries for dinner, Tasuku returned home. And a little later, Kairi also came back.

The two of them stood side by side as they prepared dinner. Tonight, it was Japanese cuisine. The fragrant aroma of grilled fish mixed with the scent of simmering chicken and vegetables stimulated Tasuku’s salivary glands.

Kairi looked at Tasuku.

He was just in the middle of grating a large daikon radish. Gripping the thick, white vegetable, he moved his hands back and forth quickly with a ‘shush shush’ sound.

Tasuku swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing noticeably.

The thin wall between appetite and desire melted away, becoming one.

As Tasuku turned off the grill, Kairi looked at Tasuku with a puzzled expression.

"Isn't it still not cooked enough?"

Relaxing the corners of his lips sensually, he reached out his hand.

"It's better if it's a little burnt."

It had been 11 hours since they had been able to be this close. It was inevitable that his desires would flare up while cooking dinner. That's why he had accidentally burnt the food so many times. Being able to turn off the grill was significant progress.

He looked seriously into Youhei’s reddened eyes.

“Can I ask you to do this? Can you save my brother?”

Youhei nodded deeply and smiled a little.

“Leave it to me. I don’t have any family, so even if I get caught, no one will be sad except for myself. I’ll be fine.”

***

The detective who had left the interrogation room after being called by a colleague barged back in with a grim expression. He kicked the leg of the desk in front of Tasuku, glaring at him.

“The questioning is over. You’re free to go.”

“......”

Tasuku, his eyes bloodshot, stared blankly at the detective’s square face. He was unable to comprehend the situation.

The detective kicked the leg of the desk again. This time, the desk jolted with enough force to switch Tasuku’s numbed nerves back on.

“Does this mean I’m being released? Why so suddenly?”

However, the detective had no intention of explaining the situation, nor did he offer even a token apology.

“Quit looking so clueless. If you don’t get up from that chair right now, I’ll gut that guilty belly of yours. You’re the type who’s probably got a history of fraud, tax evasion, and assault—I’ll shake a little and the dirt will come flying out.”

Tasuku was rushed out of the interrogation room. His belongings, including his phone, were returned to him, and he was told he could leave.

…Forty-five hours that felt like a week had come to an abrupt end. Just moments ago, Tasuku had been consumed with the thought that he was about to be prosecuted, possibly having other crimes pinned on him. He imagined years of imprisonment, falling deeper and deeper into a bottomless pit. The reality of his release didn’t feel real. Yet, even though he couldn’t fully grasp it, his legs started moving faster, and before he knew it, he was nearly running as he burst through the front doors of the police station.

A flash of yellow enveloped him.

The evening wind and light brushed against his cheeks.

A car honked impatiently on the road ahead, the sound leaping high into the sky.

The familiar everyday world unfolded at eye level.

As Tasuku’s gaze swept across the scene, it gradually settled on a figure. His eyes widened in surprise and excitement.

Standing in the middle of the sidewalk was a young man in a suit, looking right at him. The wind that had brushed through his honest, black hair now reached Tasuku. The man’s black eyes, still fixed on him, softened gently.

“...Kairi...”

Tasuku’s heart pounded.

He started walking, almost as if pulled toward Kairi. As he did, Kairi also walked toward him.

The moment they were close enough to touch, Tasuku embraced his brother… No, perhaps he was the one clinging to him.

Kairi’s gentle hands patted his back softly.

“It’s okay now. You did well.”

Kairi’s voice carried the warm, protective tone of an older brother. But there was also a slight tremble in it.

With his precious brother in his arms, Tasuku could finally feel, in every cell of his body, that everything would truly be alright.

Once his emotions finally calmed down, Kairi gently slipped out of the embrace.

“Let’s go home, Tasuku.”

As they started walking, Tasuku mumbled in a weary voice,

“…I don’t get it at all. Why was I released so suddenly?”

“Youhei-kun told the police about how he and Tatsuya had been selling drugs at ‘Blossom’. He also testified that they hid the drugs in your locker.”

Tasuku looked down at his brother’s face in shock.

“Youhei… did that?”

“He’s being questioned about it right now.”

Kairi glanced back at the police station over his shoulder as he spoke.

Tasuku stopped and looked up at the building, now bathed in the red glow of the sunset.

――Youhei… helped me?

The memory of Youhei’s misguided attempt at repaying him with a bag of drugs flashed in his mind. A sharp pain gripped his chest.

“What he did isn’t something that can be forgiven. But… I don’t want to use the words ‘he had it coming.’”

There are places people get trapped in, especially when they grow up in difficult circumstances.

Maybe that thought was tinged with a bit of self-justification.

Feeling his wrist being grasped, Tasuku turned his gaze back to his brother.

“Let’s go.”

“...Yeah.”

As they walked, Kairi spoke, as if pulling Tasuku along with him. “Tasuku, a crime is still a crime. Whether you’re judged for it or not, your heart knows what’s right.”

Who was he referring to, and what was he talking about?

As they walked down the road, now dyed red by the sunset, Tasuku looked inward to examine his own heart.
